The first edition of the Olympic Forum dedicated to Sport and Mental Health focused on sportspeople.
David Escudé, President of the Barcelona Olympic Foundation and Barcelona City Councillor for Sports, was in charge of welcoming the audience to the auditorium of the Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport JA Samaranch where there were sports personalities, sports organisations and trustees of the Barcelona Olympic Foundation.
Alejandro Blanco, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee, connected via videoconference to thank the Barcelona Olympic Foundation for their commitment to sport.
On the other hand, Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, and Pau Gasol and Joan Antoni Samaranch, through videos, expressed their support to these conferences by highlighting the value of taking care of mental health.
The first of the presentations was given by the Paralympic medallist Sergio Garrote, who spoke about the importance of sport in his life and how it was and continues to be a tool for his mental wellbeing.
Sergio Garrote’s speech was followed by a round table discussion with Olympic sportspeople Iris Tió, Jordi Sans, Almudena Cid and Gervasi Deferr. This round table, moderated by journalist Paloma del Río, highlighted the evolution of the approach to mental health in sport through three different generations of sportsmen and women.
The first day of the Olympic Forum – Romà Cuyàs Memorial paid tribute to Paloma del Río for her long career as a sports journalist and her outstanding work in the media.
