At the 125th Session of the International Olympic Committee, held on 7 September 2013 in Buenos Aires, the Japanese candidacy was chosen as Olympic host. The Organising Committee defended the power of sport as a means of bringing hopes and dreams to areas affected by the severe natural disasters that Japan suffered in 2011.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic provoked an unprecedented decision in Olympic history: the postponement of the most important sporting event for the first time in its history. In the end, the dates set for the organisation of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games were from 23 July to 8 August 2021 for the Olympic Games, and from 24 August to 5 September of the same year for Paralympic Games.
The Organising Committee hopes to make history for organising the most sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games ever.
