Lluís Meléndez Gardeñas was the driving force behind racewalking in the Spanish state. He participated in the Antwerp Olympic Games in 1920.
After retiring from his sporting career, he was a trainer, journalist and sports manager. During the last years of this journalistic career he specialised in the Olympic movement and was a special envoy at the Olympic Games in Helsinki (1952), Rome (1960) and Tokyo (1964).
