The city of Barcelona presented a bid to host the Olympic Games in 1936. The city chosen was Berlin.
From this grew the idea of the People’s Olympiad of Barcelona, an anti-fascist sporting event and an alternative to Berlin’s Olympic Games.
Thanks to the work of the COOP (Organizing Committee of the People’s Olympiad) 23 delegations, including the United States, England and France, and 5,000 athletes signed up for the games.
The People’s Olympiad project was cancelled due to the start of the Spanish Civil War.
