The Macaya Cup is considered the first regulated football competition to be held in the Spanish state (1901). Until that point, teams founded at the end of 1899 and during 1900 had been limited to playing friendly games only.
The Macaya Cup tournament was promoted by Alfons Macaya Sanmartí, honorary president of the Hispània Athletic Club and the Barcelona Royal Tennis Club. He was also the founder and first president of the Terramar Golf Club in Sitges.
The first winners of the Macaya Cup tournament were Hispània Athletic Club.
